Why You Feel Exhausted Even When You’re Doing Everything Right (And What Your Body Is Trying to Tell You)

August 17, 20267 min read

Have you ever had that quiet thought creep in:

“I’m doing everything right… so why do I still feel this exhausted?”

You’re showing up for your family. You’re trying to take care of your health. You’re working out, pushing through, staying disciplined.

And yet—something feels off.

Maybe it’s the 3 a.m. wake-ups.
Maybe it’s the brain fog.
Maybe it’s that low-level anxiety or fatigue that just won’t go away.

If that’s you, I want you to know—you’re not alone. And more importantly, you’re not doing anything wrong.

In this episode of Fulfillment Therapy, I sat down with hormone and functional health expert Bria Gad, and what she shared reframes so much of what women—especially moms in midlife—are experiencing.

Because sometimes, the issue isn’t that you’re not trying hard enough.

Sometimes… it’s that your body is asking you to try differently.

The Concept That Explains So Much: "Health Debt"

As Bria and I talked, one idea really stood out—something she calls health debt.

It’s the gap between how much energy your life requires… and how much your body actually has to give.

And here’s how she explained it:

“If we're going through life… just redlining this energy supply and demand… now all of a sudden we have a deficit. And in that deficit is ultimately where our suffering starts to come.”

When I heard that, I immediately thought about so many of you—and honestly, myself too.

Because as parents, we’re carrying:

  • Family responsibilities

  • Emotional load

  • Physical demands

  • Mental stress

  • And a desire to keep growing and improving

That’s a lot of output.

And for a long time, your body may have kept up just fine.

Until it doesn’t.

"Nothing Changed... But Everything Feels Different"

One of the things I shared with Bria during our conversation is something I hear all the time from clients—and have felt myself:

“I haven’t changed anything… but my body has.”

Her response?

It likely has changed—and for a very real reason.

“I like to think of perimenopause like a reverse puberty… it’s a massive hormonal transition.”

That perspective alone is so helpful.

Because when we think about puberty, we understand:

  • Emotions are heightened

  • Sleep is affected

  • Energy fluctuates

  • The body needs more support

But in midlife?

We don’t give ourselves that same understanding.

Instead, we expect ourselves to push harder.

The Language Your Body Has Been Speaking

One of my favorite moments in this conversation was when Bria said:

“Our bodies… speak a language to us, and that language may as well be Latin because nobody taught it to us.”

And that is exactly what it feels like, right?

Your body is saying something through:

  • Fatigue

  • Anxiety

  • Sleep disruption

  • Weight changes

  • Cravings

But instead of understanding it, we often override it.

We push through.
We ignore it.
We try to fix it quickly.

But what if those symptoms aren’t problems?

What if they’re signals?

What Your Body Does When It's Overextended

As Bria explained, when your body is in a constant energy deficit, it shifts into survival mode.

And that’s when things start to feel off.

She walked through it so clearly:

  • Your body starts conserving energy

  • Hormones shift

  • Metabolism slows

  • Sleep becomes disrupted

  • Digestion and immunity can take a hit

Not because your body is failing—

But because it’s protecting you.

And that was such an important reframe.

The Shift Most Women Need (But Rarely Make)

At one point in the conversation, Bria said something that stopped me in my tracks:

“If you are in an energy supply and demand debt… you're like using a credit card to work out and you can't pay that back.”

And I remember thinking—okay, that’s uncomfortable… but also makes so much sense.

Because so many of us rely on things like intense workouts to manage stress, feel in control, or maintain our identity.

But if your body is already depleted?

That might be adding to the problem.

Not helping it.

What It Actually Looks Like to Support Your Body

So I asked Bria what this looks like in real life.

Not in theory—but in practice.

And what she shared was surprisingly simple—and also challenging in a different way.

Instead of pushing harder, she started:

  • Sleeping more

  • Removing early alarms

  • Walking daily

  • Doing yoga and mobility work

  • Reducing intensity

And here’s what she noticed:

“All of a sudden I noticed… I feel happier. I have more energy.”

That’s not because she did more.

It’s because she finally gave her body what it needed.

The Basics We Overcomplicate

Throughout our conversation, we kept coming back to the same foundational pieces:

  • Sleep

  • Nutrition

  • Movement

  • Stress regulation

But here’s the key:

It’s not about doing these perfectly.

It’s about doing them consistently and appropriately for your season of life.

That might mean:

  • Earlier nights instead of late productivity

  • Regular meals instead of skipping and grazing

  • Walking instead of intense workouts

  • Slowing down instead of pushing through

And yes—sometimes that feels uncomfortable at first.

The Missing Piece: Joy and Fulfillment

One of the most powerful parts of this conversation was something we don’t talk about enough.

Energy doesn’t just come from food and sleep.

It also comes from how you feel.

As Bria said:

“Pleasure, purpose… is a massively underrated ability to give us energy.”

That hit.

Because how often do we treat joy like a luxury… instead of a necessity?

Time outside.
Connection.
Slowing down.
Doing something you love.

These are not extras.

They are part of your capacity.

When It's Time to Look Deeper

We also talked about when it makes sense to go beyond the basics.

Because sometimes, even when you’re doing the right things, something still feels off.

Bria explained that traditional lab work often looks for disease—but not optimization.

So if you’ve:

  • Improved your sleep

  • Focused on nutrition

  • Adjusted your movement

  • Reduced stress

…and you still don’t feel like yourself…

That may be the time to look deeper into things like gut health, hormones, and overall internal balance.

A Reality Check We All Need

One of the most honest moments in this episode was when Bria said:

“Most women… are asking Olympic levels of output of themselves, but not treating themselves like an Olympian.”

And that is so true.

You’re doing so much.

But you’re not being supported in a way that matches that demand.

And instead of adjusting expectations, we often just try harder.

The Unexpected Gift in This Season of Life

Here’s what I’ve come to believe—and what this conversation reinforced:

This stage of life, as uncomfortable as it can feel, is also an invitation.

To:

  • Slow down

  • Reevaluate

  • Let go of what isn’t serving you

  • Finally listen to your body

And maybe, for the first time in a long time…

To start choosing yourself in a healthier way.

Bringing It Back to You

At the beginning, we talked about that question:

“Why do I feel exhausted when I’m doing everything right?”

Now you know.

Because what worked before may not be what your body needs now.

And that doesn’t mean you’re failing.

It means you’re evolving.

And your body is asking you to evolve with it.

Not by doing more.

But by becoming more aware, more intentional, and more compassionate with yourself.

That’s where real fulfillment starts.
