Have you ever caught yourself moving through the days, weeks, and months on autopilot-making sure everyone is fed, homework is done, and the house is standing, but feeling like your own sense of purpose and excitement has faded into the background? If you’re a parent or spouse, you know how easy it is to fall into this cycle. We pour ourselves into our families, but sometimes, at the cost of our own fulfillment and mental wellness.
Today, I want to share something that has been a game-changer for me and countless clients: the personal audit. This isn’t about adding another task to your already packed to-do list. It’s about reclaiming your energy, excitement, and sense of direction-so you can live your best life, not just for your family, but for yourself.
Let’s be honest: parenting and family life can feel like a marathon with no finish line. The demands never really stop, and waiting for life to slow down isn’t realistic. But what if, instead of drifting through another year, you took a pause to check in with yourself? What if you could look back at the end of the year and actually remember what you accomplished-not just for your family, but for your own growth and happiness?
I used to wake up on January 1st and realize I couldn’t quite remember what I’d done for myself over the past year. Maybe you’ve felt that too. You’re not alone. So many parents and spouses get stuck in this pattern, and it’s why a personal audit is so powerful. It’s not about perfection or guilt-it’s about clarity and action.
"A personal audit is our change to pause, to reflect, and get clear on what we want for ourselves and for our families." -Kendra Nielson

A personal audit is a structured, honest self-check across the key areas of your life. Think of it as a yearly check-in where you ask: Where am I thriving? Where am I just surviving? Where do I want to grow?
The main areas to consider are:
Mental health
Relationships (marriage, parenting, friendships)
Physical health
Career or personal growth
Hobbies and passions
This isn’t about beating yourself up. It’s about seeing clearly where you are and where you want to go. As leadership expert John C. Maxwell says:
"Most people want to hear or tell a good story, but they don't realize that they can and should be the good story. That requires intentional living. It is the bridge that crosses the gap to a life that matters."-John C. Maxwell
When we’re so busy caring for others, it’s easy to lose sight of our own dreams and fulfillment. Over time, this can lead to anxiety, depression, overwhelm, or just a sense of apathy about life. We end up living by default, not by design.
But when you take the time for a personal audit, you give yourself permission to design a life that feels meaningful and exciting-not just busy. And when you do this, your family benefits too. You become a model of intentional living, and your energy and joy ripple out to those you love.

Start by rating your satisfaction in each key area (mental health, marriage, parenting, friendships, career, physical health, hobbies) on a scale of 1 to 10. Ask yourself:
What’s working well?
What’s draining my energy?
Where do I want to see change?
This isn’t about achieving a perfect 10 everywhere. It’s about noticing patterns. Maybe your marriage feels more like a business partnership than a friendship, or maybe your self-care has dropped to the bottom of the list. Awareness is the first step to change.
What would a “10” look like in each area? Picture it in detail-what would your days feel like? What would you be doing differently? Maybe it’s having regular date nights, feeling energized in the mornings, or laughing more as a family.
Tony Robbins puts it beautifully:
"Setting goals is the first step in turning the invisible into the visible."
This is about painting a clear picture of what you want-not what you think you should want.

Intentional living means making choices that reflect your values and priorities. For parents, this could mean protecting family dinners from work interruptions, being active in your community, or carving out time for a personal hobby.
For me, that’s sometimes meant picking up pickleball lessons again when I realized I was burnt out, or making time for art when I needed a creative outlet. What fills your soul? Not what fills someone else’s, but what truly energizes you?
Andy Roddick once said:
"A goal without a plan is just a wish." -Andy Roddick
Write down your vision. Set specific, realistic goals for each area you want to improve.
Big changes can feel overwhelming, so break them into small, doable steps. Maybe it’s a 10-minute walk each day, a weekly at-home date night, or a new bedtime routine. Track your progress in a way that works for you-planner, journal, family whiteboard, or digital app.
I love using a paper planner with a habit tracker. At the end of each month, I jot down my wins-personal and family-and at the end of the year, I review them. This helps me see what worked, what didn’t, and where I want to focus next.
Mel Robbins reminds us:
"You are not starting at zero. You've already started taking steps towards your goals. You have momentum, and I want you to keep going."
Accountability helps too. Find a friend, spouse, or community to share your goals with and check in regularly.

Let me paint a picture. Imagine sitting down at the end of the year, flipping through your planner or journal, and actually seeing all the ways you’ve grown. Maybe you notice that your family laughed more together, that you prioritized your health, or that you made time for a hobby that brings you joy.
Or maybe you realize there were things that didn’t serve you or your family-commitments that drained your energy, routines that left you feeling disconnected. That’s valuable information too. It helps you make better choices for the year ahead.
I like to give myself a half-day, ideally in a peaceful spot (sometimes on my patio, sometimes just by a window), to really focus on this process. If you can, try to get away for a few hours-maybe even a cabin retreat-to reflect and plan. This matters more than almost anything else you’ll do all year.
Remember, this isn’t about a complete overhaul. It’s about steady, realistic shifts. Envisioning your level 10 life gives you direction and motivation. Setting realistic goals turns dreams into reality. Breaking those goals into small steps makes change manageable.
You have the power to create a life that excites and fulfills you-starting now, even if you have young kids, a busy job, or a million things on your plate. Don’t wait for the perfect time. Get intentional and make this year your best story yet.
"If it's important to you, you'll find a way. If not, you'll find an excuse."-Kendra Nielson

Let’s return to that feeling I described at the beginning-the one where you look back at the year and can’t quite remember what you accomplished for yourself. Now imagine a different ending. Imagine looking back and seeing a year filled with growth, connection, and joy-not just for your family, but for you.
A personal audit isn’t just a tool-it’s a mindset shift. It’s a commitment to living by design, not by default. It’s about creating a life that feels purposeful, not just busy. And when you do this, you give your family the best gift of all: a happier, healthier, more fulfilled you.
As Viktor Frankl, renowned psychiatrist and Holocaust survivor, once said:
"When we are no longer able to change a situation, we are challenged to change ourselves." -Viktor Frankl
So, as you step into this new year, give yourself the gift of reflection and intention. Your story matters. Make it one you’re proud to tell.
With warmth and encouragement,
Kendra Nielson
