"I believe that the greatest gift you can give your family and the world is a healthy you." - Joyce Meyer
Hey friend! In today's post, we are going to talk about taking care of your health. I know a lot of you are parents, and even if you are not, there are so many demands on you and your time. But my friend, Michelle Riechman is going to walk us through making small changes become big life gains.
In our fast-paced world, it's easy to neglect our health while juggling the demands of parenting, work, and relationships. However, taking care of ourselves is not just a luxury—it's a necessity that impacts every aspect of our lives, including our roles as parents and partners.
Michele Riechman is a personal trainer, yoga teacher, and health coach with her doctorate in physical therapy. As the host of the Healthy Beyond 40 podcast, she helps women nourish their bodies, get healthy, and optimize their metabolism. Michelle emphasizes the importance of starting small when it comes to improving our health.
"Start small. And I think that's where everyone gets so thrown off. When we live in a culture of diets or more extreme exercise, a lot of people get into that all or nothing mindset."
This approach is crucial for sustainable change. Instead of overwhelming ourselves with drastic lifestyle overhauls, we can begin with manageable steps:
Start with 5-10 minutes of exercise daily
Focus on incorporating more whole foods into our meals
Gradually increase protein intake for better muscle health
As the famous saying goes, "The journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step." - Lao Tzu
When we prioritize our health, we're not just benefiting ourselves—we're setting a positive example for our children and strengthening our relationships. With this in mind, Michelle says to ask ourselves: "How can we make it more sustainable for us and for our kids as they are watching us?"
By making health a family priority, we create a ripple effect that impacts generations.
It's crucial to shift our focus from weight and appearance to overall health and quality of life. Michelle emphasizes: "We have to really take that into our own hands to be able to prevent disease and really live a truly healthy life as we are aging and getting older." This perspective encourages us to think long-term about our health. Imagine being able to actively play with your grandchildren or embark on adventures well into your golden years. As Michelle puts it: "It's not just the quantity, how long you live, but that quality and what you can do with that time."
Focus on whole foods: Incorporate more non-starchy vegetables and real, unprocessed foods into your diet.
Prioritize protein: Start your day with a high-protein breakfast to support muscle health and overall well-being.
Increase fiber intake: Add fiber-rich foods like raspberries, avocados, and chia seeds to support gut health.
Listen to your body: Pay attention to hunger cues and aim for 80% fullness during meals.
Move your body: Even short bursts of exercise can make a significant difference.
It's essential to approach health improvements with self-compassion rather than shame. As Michelle says: "If we do overeat or we eat something we feel like we shouldn't, how can we move past that?" Remember, self-care is not selfish. It's a fundamental aspect of being an effective parent and partner.
"Self-care is how you take your power back." - Jaeda DeWalt
Improving your health is a journey that requires patience, consistency, and self-compassion. By taking small steps and focusing on sustainable changes, you're not only enhancing your own life but also positively impacting your family and relationships. As you embark on this journey, remember the words of Jim Rohn: "Take care of your body. It's the only place you have to live." Your health is your most valuable asset, so nurture it, and watch how it transforms every aspect of your life.
