"When we're stressed, we're more likely to see others as means to an end rather than as human beings." - Dr. Brené Brown
Hey friend! In today's post, we're going to explore how to stop hurting the ones we love the most and foster genuine relationships.
We often find ourselves treating people as:
Obstacles: Getting in our way
Vehicles: Using them to get what we want
Irrelevant: Ignoring or dismissing them
This is poisonous to relationships, especially within our families.
Children may feel unimportant or burdensome, affecting their long-term self-esteem
Marriages can suffer from emotional distance and resentment
Friendships may become superficial, lacking genuine connection.
Relationships are the source of the greatest joy and fulfillment in life. Taking these steps will break the cycle of harm, improve relationships, and increase fulfillment.
Start by recognizing when you're treating others as obstacles. Pay attention to your body language and tone of voice. Are your shoulders tense? Is there a frown on your face?
Action steps:
Keep a journal to identify patterns in your behavior
Set reminders to check in with yourself throughout the day
Practice mindfulness exercises to stay present
Remember Ian McLaren's words:
"Everyone you meet is fighting a battle you know nothing about"
. Try to understand the perspectives and challenges of those around you.
Action steps:
Ask open-ended questions to learn more about your family members' experiences
Listen actively without interrupting or judging
Show empathy by acknowledging others' feelings
When we're stressed and burnt out, we're more likely to treat others poorly. Taking care of yourself is crucial for maintaining positive relationships.
Action steps:
Engage in regular exercise or relaxation techniques
Set boundaries to protect your time and energy
Practice stress-reduction techniques like deep breathing or meditation
Embrace the Costa Rican philosophy of "pure life," which emphasizes appreciation for the present moment. This can help you shift focus from productivity to presence.
Action steps:
Practice gratitude daily
Engage in activities that bring you joy without a specific goal
Spend quality time with family members without distractions
Make a conscious effort to rebuild connections that may have been strained by stress or neglect.
Action steps:
Schedule regular family activities or outings
Create opportunities for one-on-one time with each family member
Express appreciation and affection openly and frequently
Breaking the cycle of seeing people as obstacles requires conscious effort and practice. By cultivating self-awareness, curiosity, and a focus on the present moment, we can transform our relationships and create a more fulfilling family life. Remember,
